This is a short summary of the presentation.
Our main message is that the nutritional aspects of food consumption must be included in the climate discussion, to avoid erroneous conclusions when it comes to targeting food consumption to reduce climate impact.
It is common to compare the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the production of different food items per kilogram of produce (g CO2-equivalents per kilogram of food), using a life cycle perspective. We argue that when it comes to comparing the climate impact of food, this is not a suitable unit. Food consumption must fulfill daily requirements of a large number of nutrients and it is therefore important to include also nutritional parameters when discussing the climate impact of different food choices. The Swedish Dairy Association has initiated a scientific study where we compare the most common meal beverages in Sweden (tap water, milk, soft drink, juice, beer, wine and bottled carbonated water) with regard to both nutritional and climate aspects. In addition, we have included oat drink and soy drink, as vegetable alternatives to animal foods are often proposed as better from a climate perspective. This study is now being revised for publication in a scientific journal. When hope to return with the final results when the paper has been accepted for publication. The preliminary results show that a high nutrient density, such as that of milk, can outweigh comparatively higher GHG-emissions per kilogram of beverage.
